Indirect Mosaic Course
Mosaic is an artistic and craft discipline based on the creation of images through small fragments—known as tesserae—made from a variety of materials such as ceramic, glass, stone, or recycled materials. Throughout history, it has played an important role in architecture, public art, and decoration, evolving from Roman pavements to contemporary artistic expressions. Its fragmentary nature gives mosaic a unique visual language in which rhythm, colour, direction, and texture are essential elements of the composition.
This course approaches mosaic as a complete artistic practice, encompassing design, planning, execution, and installation. Each student will develop their own mosaic project from beginning to end, carrying out every stage of the creative and technical process.
Teaching will be workshop-based, with individual guidance tailored to the technical and creative requirements of each project. Before the practical work begins, each student will take part in an individual tutorial session aimed at:
- Adapting the technical objectives to the participant’s level of experience.
- Understanding their interests and initial ideas.
- Defining the scale and feasibility of the project.
- Providing guidance on the design process.
The indirect method consists of creating the mosaic on a temporary support, placing the tesserae face down onto paper before transferring them to their final support. This technique is particularly suitable for:
- Medium- and large-scale works.
- Modular projects.
- Architectural surfaces.
- Collaborative projects.
- Greater control over the overall composition.
During the course, particular emphasis will be placed on this technique, covering:
- Design preparation.
- Image inversion.
- Temporary consolidation methods.
- Tessera production.
- Tessera spacing and arrangement.
- Finishing processes and final cleaning.
